The practicum (research experience) is a unique opportunity for DOE NNSA SSGF
fellows to work in a DOE national laboratory setting. This experience offers fellows
rare insight into how their scientific interests can be used to further research critical
to the nation, and allows them to work with some of the most respected scientists
in the world.
The practicum, which spans a minimum of one 12-week period, can be completed at
one of the following laboratories: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (California),
Los Alamos National Laboratory (New Mexico) or Sandia National Laboratories (New
Mexico or California).
Fellows use the practicum experience as a time to learn new skills and expand
research capabilities outside of their thesis study area. This research experience is
typically completed during the summer, but can be accomplished at any time within the
first two years of the fellowship. Fellows receive appropriate travel reimbursement
and an additional financial allowance to cover extra expenses during the practicum.
Upon request, fellows have the opportunity to participate in an optional second
practicum. This affords interested individuals a chance to spend time at a different
DOE laboratory working on a research project of interest.
