Ames, IA (December 6, 2006) – The Krell Institute is
pleased to announce the winners of the 2006 Department of Energy
Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program
Excellence in Writing award.
Julianne Chung, first-year DOE CSGF fellow in
Computational Mathematics at Emory University, with her essay
Making Blurry Images a Thing of the Past. An
honorable mention award was given to David Potere, fourth-year
fellow at Princeton University, for his essay Space
Harvest.
Ms. Chungs essay described how her research was taking on
the challenge of using computational science to create a clear
image from a blurry one—such as a PET scan or even a
family photo.
The purpose of the essay competition, open to current CSGF fellows
and alumni is to encourage better communication between non-expert
audiences and experts about the value of computational science
and engineering. This years winning essay writer
will receive a cash prize of $1000, and the honorable mention
essay will receive a cash prize of $500. In addition to
the cash prizes, the winners will have the opportunity to work with
a professional science writer to critique and polish their essays.
