Krell Institute Announces 2006 DOE CSGF Excellence in Writing Winners

Ames, IA (December 6, 2006) – The Krell Institute is pleased to announce the winners of the 2006 Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship Program Excellence in Writing award.

Julianne Chung, first-year DOE CSGF fellow in Computational Mathematics at Emory University, with her essay “Making Blurry Images a Thing of the Past.” An honorable mention award was given to David Potere, fourth-year fellow at Princeton University, for his essay “Space Harvest”.

Ms. Chung’s essay described how her research was taking on the challenge of using computational science to create a clear image from a blurry one—such as a PET scan or even a family photo.

The purpose of the essay competition, open to current CSGF fellows and alumni is to encourage better communication between non-expert audiences and experts about the value of computational science and engineering.  This year’s winning essay writer will receive a cash prize of $1000, and the honorable mention essay will receive a cash prize of $500.  In addition to the cash prizes, the winners will have the opportunity to work with a professional science writer to critique and polish their essays.
